Academic Standing
Academic Standing is evaluated at the end of each academic semester for those students enrolled in a degree or certificate program, following the final grade due date listed on the Academic Calendar. A student placed on Academic Warning, Probation, or Suspension will receive an electronic letter via their official Norwich email and at times the personal email on record.
The Satisfactory Academic Standing policy is different from the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy used by the Financial Aid office to determine eligibility for financial aid. Refer to the SAP policy for further information.
Definitions
Satisfactory Academic Standing is when a student is meeting course grade or grade point average requirements. A student with a Satisfactory Academic Standing is eligible to enroll in classes and participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities without restrictions.
Academic Warning is the least severe level in the Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension process. A student placed on Academic Warning is in Satisfactory Academic Standing. Academic Warning serves as an opportunity to address challenges with the goal of preventing students from being placed on Academic Probation. Academic Warning does not appear on students' official academic record.
Academic Probation indicates a student is experiencing serious academic difficulty that may ultimately lead to Academic Suspension. Academic Probation appears on the student's official academic record. A student on Academic Probation is no longer in Satisfactory Academic Standing and is at high risk of not completing a degree.
Academic Suspension indicates the student experiences persistent and severe academic challenges. Academic Suspension appears on the student's academic record. A student on Academic Suspension is no longer in Satisfactory Academic Standing, and is not an active student, providing them time to reassess their academic and career goals and/or resolve other causes for continued academic failure. Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is determined by calculating credit hours of all coursework for which a grade has been recorded (see also Grades).
Plan for Academic Improvement is a document prepared by the student to identify areas of concern inhibiting academic success and includes strategies to help overcome the challenges identified.
Academic Probation Plan is a document prepared by the student to identify areas of concern inhibiting academic success with strategies to help overcome the challenges identified.
Active Program is a program of study that is offered during the academic year the student will return to the University. Every attempt will be made to permit the student to complete a program that has become inactive during their absence by, for example, transitioning to a similar program or being granted permission to complete the inactive program with suitable and current course options. Programs leading to licensure or having specialized accreditation will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and within current regulations.
Reactivation is for a student who is separated from the university whether in satisfactory, warning, or probation for at least one semester., including due to a military withdrawal or leave. The student will return to the same academic status (i.e. class, level, academic standing) they had during their last term of enrollment.
Readmission is when a student was forced to separate from the University because of academic suspension or conduct/discipline. The student will return on Academic Probation after being readmitted if they were academically suspended.
Undergraduate Students
Satisfactory Academic Standing
To remain in satisfactory academic standing, a student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.
Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension Procedures
A student whose semester GPA or cumulative GPA drops below 2.00 is subject to Academic Warning, Academic Probation, and/or Academic Suspension.
Academic Warning
A student will be placed on Academic Warning when one of the following criteria is met:
After completion of the first semester at Norwich University, they have a semester GPA between 1.00 and 1.99;
A returning student, currently in a good standing, earning a cumulative GPA below 2.00; or
A returning student who has a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above but have earned a semester GPA below 1.00.
In collaboration with support staff a student on Academic Warning should make use of the academic resources available to them and create an academic resources available to them and create an academic Improvement plan at the beginning of the semester to outline the steps they will take to return to Satisfactory Academic Standing.
At the end of the Academic Warning semester, students will either:
Be removed from Academic Warning status by raising their cumulative GPA to 2.00 or above;
Continue on Academic Warning for one more semester by earning a semester GPA of 2.00 or above but failing to raise the cumulative GPA above 2.00;
Continue on Academic Warning by earning semester GPA of below 1.00 but maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above;
Be placed on Academic Probation by earning a cumulative GPA below 2.00 and a semester GPA below 2.00; or
Be placed on Academic Probation if, after two semesters on Warning, the cumulative GPA is below 2.00 regardless of the semester GPA.
Academic Probation
A student is placed on Academic Probation when one of the following criteria is met:
After completion of one semester at Norwich, they have a semester GPA of 0.99 or below;
After completion of one semester on Academic Warning, they earn both a cumulative GPA and a semester GPA below 2.00;
After completion of the second semester on Academic Warning, their cumulative GPA is below 2.00 regardless of the semester GPA.
Being put on Academic Probation places restrictions and conditions on a student's enrollment. A student placed on Academic Probation is allowed to continue their enrollment at the university for the subsequent term under the following conditions:
Conditions while on Academic Probation
A student will:
Develops an Academic Probation Plan with the Center for Academic Success and Achievement or the program management team by the end of the second week of classes of the semester/term.
The plan will determine the number of credits the student should take to promote student success.
The plan will prioritize repeating failed courses if practical.
Not participate in extracurricular activities, such as varsity or club athletics or special interest clubs.
The Academic Probation plan will determine the student's ability to participate in limited community service learning or other academic-related activities that promote student success.
Will have a rank in the Corps of Cadets or have additional Corps responsibilities.
The student can petition to participate in extracurricular activities while on Academic Probation by completing an Academic Petition to Participate while on Academic Probation to the Committee on Academic Standing and Degrees (CASD).
At the end of the semester during which a student is on Academic Probation, they will:
Be removed from Academic Probation and returned to Satisfactory Standing by earning a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above; or
Continue on Academic Probation by earning a semester GPA of at least 2.00 but maintaining a cumulative GPA of less than 2.00; or
Be Academically Suspended by failing to earn a semester GPA of 2.00 or above and maintaining a cumulative GPA of less than 2.00.
Academic Suspension
A student will be placed on Academic Suspension:
at the conclusion of the Academic Probation semester the semester and cumulative GPA are below a 2.0.
Graduate Students
Satisfactory Academic Standing
To maintain Satisfactory Academic Standing, a Graduate student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

A student is placed on Academic Probation when:
The cumulative GPA is below a 3.0.
Academic Suspension
A student will be suspended when:
After one semester on Academic Probation and fail to earn a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Appeal of Academic Suspension for Immediate Readmission
Under mitigating circumstances, a student may appeal for immediate readmission. A student seeking to appeal an Academic Suspension must submit an appeal no later than the Wednesday before the first day of classes to the CASD Committee (form available on the Registrar’s website) including any documentation in support of mitigating circumstances. For instructions, follow the Readmission, Reactivation section of the catalog. While the appeal is under review, a student may not enroll in courses, attend a class, or participate in extra- or co-curricular activities. In the event of a successful appeal, a student will be placed on Academic Probation and must follow the Academic Probation procedures.
Grade Change after Academic Standing Posted
A grade change entered for a course in the previous term will affect academic standing for the previous term; but, no student will be academically suspended within the current semester due to a grade change.
