Structures of Power

Description

This course explores the interactions, conflicts, and negotiations between institutions of power and the people who live under them. Students study key philosophical and sociological thinkers then consider how theories compare to the lived experiences of Berliners and the physical space of the city. Students are encouraged to think critically about social relations, dynamics of production and exchange, and uses of urban space. Themes may include the politics of life and death, migration, racism, creative class, temporary uses of space, housing, gentrification, and urban management. A student with credit in PO 300: Berlin: Structures of Power or HI 361: Structures and Power cannot also earn credit for INTD 301.
