Description

This course will trace the linguistic, material, and cultural development of the English language from its North Germanic beginnings to its current status as a global lingua franca, with special attention to the early British forms. We will attend to the structure of language (e.g., lexicon, syntax, phonetics) as well as to its socio-political aspects (e.g., migration, class, codification). Students will be asked to read, analyze, and contextualize texts in Old, Middle, and Early Modern English. Required for the English Major. Fulfills Gen. Ed. Humanities requirement but will not serve as literature elective. Prerequisite: EN 102 or EN 111.
